About Bank Street

A Message from the President

Augusta Souza Kappner photo Welcome to the Bank Street College of Education Web site. As you go through our site, you will come to know Bank Street as a small and complex institution, a vibrant place known worldwide for its programs in teacher education, early childhood education, educational leadership training, and its progressive School for Children.

The Bank Street School for Children is an independent laboratory school and a working model of the College's approach to learning and teaching. The School offers a rich learning environment while providing the College with a setting for teacher training, research, and the development of curriculum materials. The School serves as a benchmark for the kind of education that Bank Street is working to achieve in hundreds of schools in New York City and in school systems across the country.

To improve the quality of public education, Bank Street works with students, parents, teachers, and administrators in more than 400 schools in New York City and fourteen other cities. We are a nationally recognized leader in early childhood education, a pioneer in improving the quality of classroom instruction, and a national advocate for children and families. Bank Street conducts research and develops and operates programs that meet the emerging needs of children, families, and educators--from the plight of homeless families to the complexities of welfare reform, from school management to public school reform.

The College is composed of a Graduate School of Education, serving 900 students; a School for Children and Family Center serving 500 children aged six months to thirteen years; a Division of Continuing Education; and a Publications and Media Group, which prepares learning materials for and about children in a variety of media. Through the work of these divisions, Bank Street influences thousands of children, youth, parents, and educators throughout the United States and abroad.
