Lower Camp
The Lower Camp consists of 9 groups for children 4-8 years old. Our two and five-week programs is designed to offer children an opportunity to explore the city and its vast resources, and to learn and play in a relaxed setting. The children will use air-conditioned classrooms that are equipped with challenging and enriching materials for early childhood and elementary-school-aged children, including art, block building, woodworking, computer fun, games, reading, music, dramatic events, as well as time on the roof, the deck and the gym.
Led by our Lower Camp Aquatics Directors Chris Mera and Amia Soto-Carrion, the waterfront staff instructs the children in small groups or individually, at appropriate swim levels with an emphasis on safety, skill and enjoyment of water. The advanced swimmers will work on endurance, stroke refinement and water safety skills. The staff-to-child ratio in the water is 1:3 for younger children, up to 1:6 for older children. The Lower Camp swim program takes place at the Barnard College pool, located at Broadway and 117th Street. Each week on Wednesdays most of the Lower Campers spend the day at scenic Lake Welch in Harriman State Park. Our own swim staff will accompany the groups in private buses for a day of supervised activities. Each group has a picnic lunch, with time for nature studies and playing games.
