On October 16, 2013, Lou Palefsky, Director of Financial Aid at Bank Street College of Education, was honored with two awards at the 45th Annual New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association (NYSFAAA) Meeting.
The first was the Circle Award which is "awarded to outgoing executive council members as recognition & appreciation of their service on both state-wide & regional basis." The second was a Citation of Appreciation which is "awarded to members or non-members for general activities or singular functions which have supported the goals of NYSFAAA and/or have contributed to the welfare of its members."
Lou has served as the Region 6 representative to the NYSFAAA Executive Council for the past two years. During this time he has helped to reshape Region 6 by serving as a mentor for new and seasoned financial aid professionals in order to cultivate future leadership in the region. Additionally, he has helped to resurrect the New York State Graduate and Professional Concerns Committee. Through this work, as well as in his daily professional activities, Lou has proven to be an enthusiastic advocate for the graduate sector in student aid.
At the awards ceremony, J. Scott Atkinson, President of NYSFAAA, noted, “Some people focus on small things. Some focus on the big picture. There are people who take the long view about their work and the other things they do, making sure that there are plans in place to cement the future of an organization like NYSFAAA. Leadership comes in many forms. Some people learn to lead and some are natural born leaders. Lou Palefsky is a natural-born leader.”
