Overview

Overview | Message from the Dean

"The Division of Continuing Education was designed to extend Bank Street's mission to a broader and more diverse community. The Division promotes and offers quality professional development and lifelong learning programs for educators. We help teachers, teaching artists and other practitioners to create supportive and academically rich environments where children, adolescents and adults are always engaged in active, and hands-on learning. We do this by:
  • Designing and implementing programs which broaden and strengthen the repertoire of teaching strategies through onsite observation, in classroom work, assessment, modeling exemplary practices, workshops and mini seminars and visits to observe other schools.
  • Providing ongoing short format, weekend, continuing professional education courses and workshops which link theory and practice and provide a forum for sharing and discussion.
  • Developing and implementing direct service programs which provide academic skills, parenting education, tutoring, adult education, college prep to children, youth and adults.
  • Producing high quality curriculum materials, training tools including videotapes, slide presentations, and a range of models for staff development.
  • Preparing and disseminating information on curriculum, program development models, program-related research and evaluations.
During the professional development process, Bank Street staff developers may assist teachers to create lesson plans, plan curriculum, identify strategies to address literacy, integrate music and the expressive arts and technology, establish routines to support classroom management, support their own professional growth and learning, and to see themselves as professionals, writers and/or researchers. All professional development plans are designed to meet the particular and special needs of each school.
