This video was created by Nancy McKeever for use in EDUC 606: Block Building and Dramatic Play. The following is an excerpt of the report she wrote following the use of this video in her course for the first time:

...I always give a lecture half way through the Block Course. The lecture focuses on four areas: Blocks in relation to the child's development; how children experience art, science, math, and social studies through blocks; the role of the teacher in facilitating dramatic play; and fantasy and reality in dramatic play. In the past, I have used only slides to support this lecture. Frequently, students expressed the desire to see children "in action" using blocks. They also expressed considerable anxiety and difficulty with ways to organize and facilitate block pick-up even though we discussed this throughout the course. Finally, as an instructor, I always struggle with ways, other than reading, lecture and discussion, to help teachers more clearly see how blocks support thinking skills in the mathematics and language arts areas. The two videos, Estimation in the Block Area and Block Pick-up: Real Time, clearly supported student learning this June as teachers saw and heard children in action, saw and heard children in an organized pick-up time, and saw and heard a teacher using blocks to support learning in the mathematics area.
