Using the software Clicker 4, students worked with a template that presented images of cultural life (e.g., play, work, toys, art) in three categories— The Inuit Then, The Inuit Now, and Our Lives. They followed on-screen prompts to first describe each image in writing and then to summarize the similarities and differences they observed. They presented these multimedia mini-compositions to parents and others in an end-of-the-year exhibition.
The driving questions behind this instruction were:
- How can we help third graders understand that traditional cultures they study (such as the Inuit) are alive, though changed, in the present day?
- How can we help them better understand the similarities and differences between their own lives, traditional, and modern Inuit life?
- How can we help students build written literacy skills while doing this?
