ECP in Newark: Collaborative Professional Development

The Center for Early Childhood Professionals delivers professional development activities for teachers and administrators in Newark Public Schools. This initiative, a long standing collaboration with the school district and New Jersey based philanthropic foundations, began in 1996 as Project New Beginnings (NB). During the following decade NB provided professional development and support for over 300 teachers in 20 schools. Originally conceived as an early childhood classroom restructuring initiative, the Project grew in scope and depth during its tenure, and by 2006 was providing PD services for Pre-k through eigth grade classrooms in all areas of curriculum and instruction.

What stands out about the NB model, and continues in ECP's approach today, is a firm commitment to collaborative learning, best practices and improved student outcomes. Through ECP in Newark, elementary school teachers, support staff and administrators continue to participate in Inquiry-based Study Groups. Meeting monthly, these groups provide participants with the opportunity to examine and reflect upon their current classroom practices, while exploring new areas of learning, developing effective instructional strategies, and implementing a specific area of curriculum and tracking its impact on student achievement.
