The Family Center as a Training Site
As a training site, the Family Center provides student teaching placements and internships for students from a variety of institutions and programs, including Bank Street College, New York University, Teachers College, and the Liberty Partnerships program. Interns, working as members of each room's core staff, in much the same capacity as assistant teachers, share fully in the planning and implementation of the daily program, the care of the children, and the support of their families. Graduate student teachers studying early childhood special education of infant/parent development do fieldwork placements for one or two semesters. They are assigned to a classroom and work in support of the core staff. Liberty Interns work each afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 in our classrooms. They provide just the right end-of-the-day energy and support for teachers and children, and benefit from the opportunity to explore professional options related to children and families. Onsite training and supervision are provided for all trainees by the Family Center head teachers, administrators, and faculty advisors. The Center benefits greatly from training students, since most of them come to us with a keen interest in children and families and much motivation to learn from their experiences.
