Making your gift to Bank Street

Family Center Annual Fund

The Family Center's philosophy and curriculum are based on an understanding of the ways in which young children learn best. Referred to as the developmental-interaction approach, the program supports the needs, interests and developmental tasks of young children and emphasizes the interaction between the learning child and the social and physical environment. A critical component of this approach is the focus on providing children with the opportunity to explore and learn about the diversity of their community. Thus the overall framework of the curriculum is firmly rooted in such activities as saying hello and good-bye, going to the store, building friendships, talking about who we are, what we look like, what our families look like, and what we celebrate and value.

Creating this type of environment for very young children provides a strong foundation for their future development and learning. The Family Center is able to offer such care only because families, alumni families, foundations, matching companies and friends generously support its work. This support results in a talented, professional staff of teachers and therapists, a low adult-to-child ratio, financial aid to ensure a diversity of families, an environment rich in play and relationship-building opportunities, and the home-based services program. Your gift to the Family Center allows it to continue to be a model for excellent child care programs and a training site for child care professionals.
