Infant and Family Development and Early Intervention Dual Degree with Hunter School of Social Work (34 credits at Bank Street, 51 credits at Hunter). This dual degree program provides the combined perspectives of social work and education, and prepares for a wide range of careers working with infants, toddlers, and their families. Prospective graduate students must apply both to Bank Street College and to Hunter College School of Social Work. Students begin their dual degree program at Bank Street, including completing a year of supervised fieldwork while taking classes.

Certification in Education

This program leads to certification as a social worker through the Hunter program. It does not lead to certification in Education.


Courses at Bank Street provide students with the opportunity to engage in readings, discussions, direct experience, and reflection, encouraging a constant interplay between theory and practice. Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement

Taken concurrently with coursework, supervised fieldwork is designed to foster the integration of theory and practice. During the fall and spring term of your first year you will:

  • Gain experience working with infants and toddlers.
    • Student teachers will be placed in inclusive or special education settings.
    • Working teachers and assistants in settings with infants and toddlers may do their supervised fieldwork in their workplace. Those who are not in inclusive or special education settings will gain the necessary experience working with children with special needs.
  • Be supervised by your advisor, a core graduate faculty mentor, as you work with children in your fieldwork setting.
  • Participate in a weekly conference group of 5-7 students and your advisor.
  • Meet individually with your advisor twice each month.

Career Opportunities

  • Support infants, toddlers, and their families in clinical social work settings.
  • Work in hospital, wellness, or agency settings.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants need to have strong academic backgrounds and some experience with infants and toddlers.
