Master of Science in Educaton: 43 credits
Master of Education: 43 credits
This 43-credit program in Dual Language/Bilingual Early Childhood Special Education is designed for individuals who currently hold a valid New York State certification in general education at the Early Childhood level. The program prepares Spanish-speaking dual language/bilingual teachers, early interventionists, and prospective teachers hoping to work with very young children (ages birth through age 8) for whom Spanish is the primary language.

Young Spanish-speaking children entering the school system need teachers who can speak with them in their home language, who are well prepared with a wide teaching repertoire, and who understand the intellectual, linguistic, and emotional needs of young children. This program will prepare you to work in bilingual or dual language special education and inclusive bilingual classrooms, to work with parents and with the community, and to act as an advocate for the children you teach.

You will understand and support children as individuals with a range of learning styles, backgrounds, and aspirations, all valued in building a democratic society. You will learn a developmental-interaction approach to early childhood education that will teach you to support the growth, development and learning of the whole child. You will learn assessment strategies that enhance your understanding of development and of the learning process.

You will discover ways to recognize and nurture individual learning styles and build home/school connections. In this curriculum-rich program, you will create exciting ways to engage young children in active learning.

Certification in Education
When you graduate, you will be eligible for New York State initial certification in Early Childhood Special Education, prepared to work with a wide range of monolingual and bilingual children, birth through grade 2. The program leads to professional certification for those who complete all New York State requirements and complete two years of classroom teaching beyond the mentored experience. You will also earn the Bilingual Extension.

Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement
During one academic semester, while you take courses, you will gain teaching experience and intensive advisory support through supervised fieldwork/advisement. If you are not currently working in a dual language/bilingual setting in early childhood, you will be placed in different educational settings over the semester. One placement is in a special education setting, and the at least one placement is in a traditional bilingual or dual language setting.

Throughout your semester of supervised fieldwork/advisement, your advisor will visit you in your setting each month. You will meet individually twice a month with your Bank Street advisor, and you will gather with a small, supportive peer group once a week throughout the fall and spring terms.

Integrative Master's Project
Before graduating, you will complete an independent study (master's thesis), mentored directed essay, seminar-based master's project, or portfolio. This project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest to you, or to weave together the threads of your Bank Street experience.

Admissions Requirements
Applicants to the Dual Language/Bilingual Early Childhood Special Education program must be fluent in both Spanish and English and must have valid New York State certification in Early Childhood General Education, birth through grade 2.

Degree Earned
Students for whom this is a first master's degree earn a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed). Students with a prior master's degree in Education earn an advanced Master of Education (Ed. M.) degree.
