Dual Language/Bilingual Extension Certificate
Francisco Najera, Director: 212-875-4530
- Program flyer (updated Summer 2008)
Certificate: 15 credits Individuals who are fluent in Spanish and who have a related New York State certification will find that the courses in this 15-credit Dual Language / Bilingual Extension will provide them with the theory and the practical background they need to work in bilingual and/or dual language settings with students.
You will explore the academic, social and political issues surrounding the education of children for whom English is a new or second language. Through study of rich curriculum development and classroom management techniques, you will develop a wide teaching repertoire and an understanding of the needs of children. In turn, you will learn to create supportive learning environments that value cultural heritage and dual language development.
Spanish-speaking children enter the elementary school classroom with varying levels of English proficiency. You will learn to provide rich curricular experiences in a bilingual or dual language format that respects the native language and at the same time teaches fluency in English. Through interactive discussions and hands-on classroom experiences, you will develop a deep understanding of the wide range of academic, intellectual, linguistic and emotional needs of bilingual students.
Special attention will be paid to learning to work in urban settings. In collaboration with parents (both Spanish- and English-speaking), colleagues and the community, you will learn to act as an advocate for the children you teach.
Certification in Education This course sequence leads to the Bilingual Extension in New York State.
Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement The Bilingual Extension does not require additional fieldwork.
Admissions Requirements Students do not need to apply to the Dual Language / Bilingual Extension, but do need to have a strong background in the liberal arts and sciences, and must be fluent in both Spanish and English. Students doing the Bilingual Extension will combine the extension with another certification program, or will already have completed a certification program.
