Master of Science in Education: 52 credits This 52-credit program in Dual Language / Bilingual Middle School General Education is specifically designed for Spanish-speaking bilingual teachers and prospective teachers who wish to work in grades 5 through 9 with young adolescents for whom Spanish is the primary language.
In addition to receiving the same broad preparation as general education graduate students, you will delve into the academic, social and political issues surrounding the education of children for whom English is a new language. You will learn and practice specific skills that will allow you to work effectively in dual language settings. Special attention is paid to preadolescent and adolescent immigrants and new arrivals into the school system.
Learn about the developmental issues affecting young adolescents. Use this understanding to inform your work in curriculum across all subject areas, as well as in your area of academic specialization. Develop a wide teaching repertoire and an understanding of the academic, intellectual, linguistic, social and emotional needs of young adolescents.
One of the goals of the program is to prepare dual language / bilingual teachers who can work collaboratively in inclusive classrooms, who can work with the community, and who can act as advocates for the children they teach.
Certification in Education You will earn New York State certification in Middle Childhood Education with the Bilingual Extension to work with children in grades 5 through 9. As a graduate, you will be certified both as a middle childhood generalist, qualified to teach all subjects, and as a middle childhood specialist to teach English, social studies, a foreign language, mathematics, biology or earth science, as determined by your undergraduate major.
Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement During one academic year, while you take courses, you will gain teaching experience and intensive advisory support through supervised fieldwork/advisement. If you are not currently working in a dual language / bilingual setting in a middle school or junior high, you will do your student teaching with placements both at the 5th or 6th grade level and at the 7th, 8th or 9th grade level. At least one of the classrooms in which you work will be a dual language / bilingual setting with Spanish-dominant children. Working teachers and assistants (in dual-language or bilingual settings) who stay with a particular grade in the age range must fulfill their other grade range requirements, which may include additional after school or summer school experiences.
Throughout your year of supervised fieldwork/advisement, your advisor will visit you in your setting each month. You will meet individually twice a month with your Bank Street advisor, and you will gather with a small, supportive peer group once a week throughout the fall and spring terms.
Integrative Master's Project Before graduating, you will complete an independent study (master's thesis), mentored directed essay, seminar-based master's project, or portfolio. Your choice will depend on your own goals and learning style. This project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest to you, or to weave together the threads and understandings of your Bank Street graduate experience.
Admissions Requirements Applicants to the Dual Language / Bilingual Middle School General Education program need to be fluent in English and in Spanish, to have a strong background in the liberal arts and sciences, and to have majored in a subject taught at the middle school level: English, a foreign language, mathematics, social studies (history), biology or earth science.
