Dual Language/Bilingual Middle School Special Education (grades 5 through 9)
Francisco Najera, Director: 212-875-4530
Master of Science in Education: 42 credits Master of Education: 42 credits This 42-credit program in Dual Language/ Bilingual Middle Childhood Special Education is designed for individuals who currently hold a valid New York State certification in general education at the Middle School level. It provides teachers and prospective teachers fluent in Spanish with the preparation they need to work in bilingual and dual language settings with the wide range of learners in grades 5 through 9 who may be in today¢â¡Ás general, inclusive, or special education settings.
In addition to receiving the same broad preparation as special education graduate students, you will delve into the academic, social and political issues surrounding the education of children for whom English is a new language. Special attention is paid to pre-adolescent and adolescent immigrants and new arrivals into the school system. You will learn and practice specific skills that will allow you to work effectively in dual language settings.
The program prepares dual language / bilingual teachers to work collaboratively in inclusive and special needs classrooms, work with parents, utilize community resources, and act as advocates for the children they teach.
Certification in Education When you graduate, you will be eligible for New York State initial certification in Middle Childhood Special Education, prepared to work with a wide range of monolingual and bilingual children in grades 5 through 9. The program leads to professional certification for those who complete all New York State requirements and complete two years of classroom teaching beyond the mentored experience. You will also earn the Bilingual Extension.
Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement During one academic semester, while you take courses, you will gain teaching experience and intensive advisory support through supervised fieldwork/advisement. If you are not currently working in a dual language/bilingual middle school or junior high setting, you will be placed as a student teacher at the 5th or 6th grade level and at the 7th, 8th or 9th grade level. At least one placement will be in a bilingual setting, and at least one placement will be in a setting with children who have special needs. Working teachers and assistants may use their own classroom as their primary site for college-supervised teaching, but they will also need additional college-supervised field experiences with children of diverse populations and other age(s) within the certification range. This requirement will be met through the Practicum taken during the summer.
Throughout your semester of supervised fieldwork/advisement, your advisor will visit you in your setting each month. You will meet individually twice a month with your Bank Street advisor, and you will meet with a small, supportive peer group once a week throughout the term.
Integrative Master's Project Before graduating, you will complete an independent study (master's thesis), directed essay or portfolio. Your choice will depend on your own goals and learning style. This project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest to you, or to weave together the threads and understandings of your Bank Street graduate experience.
Admissions Requirements Applicants to the Dual Language/Bilingual Middle School Special Education program must have a valid New York State certification in Middle Childhood General Education grades 5 through 9. Applicants must be fluent both in English and in Spanish.
Degree Earned Students for whom this is a first master's degree earn a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed). Students with a prior master's degree in Education earn an advanced Master of Education (Ed. M.) degree.
