Early Childhood Leadership
Denise Prince, Director: 212-875-4585
Master of Science in Education: 38 credits The Early Childhood Leadership Program is a three-summer master's degree program leading to the School Building Leader certification. The program is designed for early childhood teachers and administrators seeking professional development and preparation for careers in educational leadership.
Whether you live in New York or you live at a distance, come to Bank Street in Manhattan for one month a year to renew yourself personally and professionally. Attend Bank Street during the July term, taking courses with a cohort of early childhood educators for three consecutive summer terms.
During the two intervening academic years, through your experience of supervised fieldwork and advisement, you will gain professional support and development while working in your own early childhood settings, even if you work far from New York.
In the third July of the program, you will work together with other students in policy internships and related course work.
Certification The program leads to New York State School Building Leader certification. To be eligible for certification, students must also have completed three years of classroom teaching, nursery through twelfth grade. New York has a reciprocal agreement with most other states.
Students may take five additional credits in school district leadership (SDL) beyond the requirements for the School Building Leader (SBL) and be eligible for both SBL and SDL certifications. These five one-credit courses may be taken as electives within the basic Leadership for Educational Change program, or may be taken over-and-above SBL program requirements. To qualify for each certificate, candidates must pass the corresponding state assessment.
Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement During the two intervening academic years, candidates engage in guided field assignments at their home sites. Through Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement students practice leadership activities in their work settings and, with guidance, synthesize theory and practice.
Admissions Requirements Most prospective graduate students are experienced early childhood teachers. Preference is given to those who have been teaching for at least two years.
