Bernadette Anand presented at a social studies conference in New Orleans this fall. Bernadette continues to head Bank Street's participation in a NYCDOE Teaching of American History grant that provides professional development to public school teachers in NYC.
Nancy Balaban gave a speech to a parent and teacher group on September 20th entitled, "Two-Year-Olds Go to Preschool: Process Rather than Problem."
Leslie Bedford chaired and presented on a panel about creativity and innovation in museums at the Mid-Atlantic Museum Association in Pittsburgh. She also gave a brown bag seminar on imagination to the staff of the Boston Children's Museum. She is currently collecting research for a forthcoming chapter on the museum in its early days.
In October, Stan Chu led a science workshop to illustrate Bank Street's developmental interaction approach at Cornell University.
Marvin Cohen is co-author of an article that will appear in the upcoming winter issue of Action in Teacher Education entitled, "Sustaining Technology Integration." Marvin will be in Nepal at the Rato Bangala School this spring offering professional development in mathematics.
Barbara Coleman attended the Strategic Enrollment Management Conference in New Orleans, sponsored by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Luisa (Lili) Costa Garro presented with Christina Cepero and Bank Street graduate Lidia Pellerano, current dual language teachers at PS/IS 210, on "Multiliteracy Rubrics: A Bridge to Instruction in a K-8 Dual Language School," at the Hostos Bilingual Conference in New York in September. Lili also presented with Jackie Watts, Ana Wiesner, and Maggie Albers, dual language teachers at the Ward School Children's International Language Academy in New Rochelle, on "Planning for Language: It Works!" at the New York State TESOL in White Plains, NY in November.
Leslie Day published her book, Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City. Leslie is an adjunct instructor of Science for Teachers, a required course for all Childhood and Early Childhood programs in the Graduate School. In addition, she is an environmental and life science educator at the Elizabeth Morrow School in New Jersey. There was a book release event in early November at Gracie Mansion, hosted by Mayor Bloomberg who wrote the forward for the book.
Nancy Gropper, Coordinator of Instructional Support, has launched monthly instructors' study groups to examine course syllabi, required readings and issues of instruction.
Peggy McNamara led a panel called "Multimodal Literacy Teaching Practices in Action" at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in New York on November 17th. Two Bank Street alumni, Karl Heist and Bryan Andes, teachers at Midtown West, presented their integrated social studies curriculum on a family study and a theater study.
Nancy Nager and Jon Snyder presented at the TNE Fall Assessment Conference in Fort Meyers, FL, on November 30th on the assessment of novice teachers' performance.
Katherine O'Donnell, Frank Pignatelli, and Rima Shore were joined by Bank Street graduate Medin Lamichhane, principal of the Ullens School in Kathmandu, on a panel at the annual University Council of Educational Administrators (UCEA) Conference in Alexandria, Virginia, in November. The subject was Bank Street's work in Nepal. UCEA is a consortium of major research universities with programs in educational leadership and policy. The theme of the convention was "Fostering Compassion and Understanding Across Borders: An International Dialogue on the Future of Educational Leadership."
Terry Orr co-chaired a taskforce on "Evaluating Leadership Preparation Programs" at the same UCEA Conference. Terry also presented a paper with Diana Pounder (University of Utah) entitled, "Comparing Leadership Education from Pipeline to Preparation to Advancement: A Study of Multiple Institutions Leadership Preparation Programs." She and Katy O'Donnell are conducting an interactive session on facilitating faculty discussions of graduate survey results.
Frank Pignatelli presented a paper entitled "Reforming Accountability: A Progressive Response to No Child Left Behind," at the Progressive Education National Conference, in San Francisco in October.
Carla Poole presented at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with alum Dana Stewart. Her presentation was entitled, "Playing, Thinking and Feeling: Infant/Toddler Leaning Through Play." She also presented at New York Zero to Three, on "Reflective Supervision and Playdough Making" at the Ackerman Institute for Families and Children in NYC.
Denise Prince is teaching a yearlong child development course at a nursery school in upper Manhattan to teachers and assistant teachers.
Jon Snyder, Rima Shore, and Frank Pignatelli represented Bank Street College at the grand opening of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Chinese Art in Beijing, China, from November 1st to 3rd. The new museum's founder, Guy Ullens, supports Bank Street's leadership work with an innovative school in Nepal.
Jon Snyder has been appointed to the AACTE Task Force on Accreditation and the Professionalization of Teaching. Jon has also been appointed to the Department of Education's Advisory Panel to the Middle School Initiative, funded by the City Council.
Jon presented at the TNE Learning Network meeting on October 30th in Denver, CO. His paper was on the challenges of using outcome data to renew teacher education programs.
Susan Stires attended the USBBY (U.S. Board of Books for Young People) in November in Tucson, AZ. She also attended and spoke at NCTE in November.
