Are there any student groups I can join?
COS!!! Join the Council of Students to help make a difference in what goes on in and around Bank Street College. We always welcome any interested people at any time of the year. Visit the COS site to find out about upcoming meetings and events.
Because of the intensive nature of a Bank Street graduate student's life, with teaching and coursework and family, there isn't a lot of time for effective extra-curricular groups. If you're still interested in joining another student group, there are a number of student organizations at Teachers College/Columbia University that may allow Bank Street students to become members. Contact these organizations directly to find out more.
How do I get more information about using the Library?
You can always ask if a reference librarian is available to help you. If not, the library personnel has put together a web page full of links about the Bank Street's library called Library Website Index A-Z. Feel free to e-mail questions about the Library to Carol Van Houten.
Where can I buy required books at cheaper prices? Is there a board for students who want to sell or buy tickets?
The Bank Street Bookstore is online with discounted texts at textbookx.com! While Half.com and Amazon.com are both excellent sites with good prices, textbookx.com is often able to offer deeper discounts.
Also, the Council of Students has a bulletin board outside of the Graduate Suite on the 6th floor of 610 West 112th Street; a section of this board is dedicated to students who want to advertise the sale or purchase of old course books. Feel free to post your advertisement, but please be respectful of space so that all students can use the board. A representative of COS will monitor the board and remove notices when they become outdated.
How can I get a bankstreet.edu e-mail address? How long can I keep it?
All registered students are eligible for a bankstreet.edu e-mail account. Download the Student Request Form for a Bank Street E-mail Account, and return it to the Computing & Information Services (CIS) office on the 7th floor of 610 West 112th Street. Keep in mind that CIS will deactivate your account one month after you graduate.
Are there any financial supports beyond student loans and financial aid?
Use the Financial Aid Office! COS are big supporters of the friendly and very helpful advice of the financial aid staff at Bank Street. They are at the heart of scholarships, grants, etc., that are available to many Bank Street students. You can link to their Web site, which also lists outside resources, but we also recommend that you contact the office directly (212-875-4408) and set up an individualized meeting.
I've done all my required coursework. What else do I need to graduate?
There are many different requirements and timelines for graduation, depending on when you graduate, what program you are in, and what you want to do. COS recommends that you contact Ann Cox in the Registrar's Office for a checklist of various requirements. It may seem like a daunting task, but with a little persistence, we will all graduate in due time.
Do I need to get permission if I want to take a class ahead of schedule?
To take a class ahead of schedule, you'll need to make sure you have fulfilled the appropriate requirements for whatever class that is. COS recommends that you contact your program advisor or department head directly. He or she will know which classes you can take and when.
Are there supports for students who have - or think they have - a learning disability?
Bank Street has its very own department that supports students with learning disabilities. Contact Olga Romero (212-875-4468) at the Office for Students with Disabilities. Also, you may want to contact the Bank Street Bookstore, where the staff may be able to suggest resources for you. |
