Once you become a Bank Street graduate student you are encouraged to get fingerprinted as soon as possible. Processing time by the New York State Dept. of Education can take approximately 12-16 weeks. Delays in processing can cause you setbacks as you try to obtain certification and employment, even as a student teacher.

If you will be a Student Teacher working within the New York City Dept. of Education or if you already have a job offer (and a letter to prove it) from a New York City public school then you should follow these instructions for getting fingerprinted by the New York City Department of Education.

All other students should be fingerprinted by the New York State Deptartment of Education. Follow these instructions to be fingerprinted by New York State.

If you are fingerprinted by the city, follow the instructions for sending the information on to the state. Similarly, if you are fingerprinted by the state, follow the instructions for sending the information to the city. You do not have to be fingerprinted twice. However, you should take steps to ensure that you are cleared by both entities; otherwise you could face delays when trying to get certified or find employment.
