Teach while you learn & learn while you teach!

Part-time and Flexible Schedules
At Bank Street, prospective students do not have to choose between part-time or full-time study when applying to a program. Many students begin or end their programs on a part-time schedule. For one year of the program (fall & spring semester), students must attend school full-time. In this academic year, students are integrating the daytime supervised fieldwork component with at least one afternoon or evening class. All graduate classes are held in the evening from 4:45 - 6:45 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., allowing students flexibility over their weekday schedule.

Student Fieldwork & Working in Education While Studying
At Bank Street, you can choose to complete your fieldwork and advisement as a student teacher, assistant teacher, paid intern, or head teacher. If you choose the option of student teacher, Bank Street will place you in three or four separate schools over the course of two semesters. Student teachers work three days a week in unpaid positions. Graduate students who have secured their own positions as assistant teachers or as head teachers with children in classrooms appropriate for their graduate programs are usually able to use their own classrooms for their supervised fieldwork settings.

Internship Certificate Credential
Students who have completed at least half the credits of their programs and who have a job offer from a school that requires teachers to have certification can secure a temporary New York State certification through The Internship Credential Certificate. To understand our process here at Bank Street, look at the following page: http://webstaging.bankstreet.edu/gems/gs/iccfacts.pdf.

Alternative Teaching Programs
Bank Street College provides Transitional B Certification only to students who pursue a master's degree program with Bank Street College in partnership with Teach for America. Applicants must apply directly to Teacher for America. If they are accepted and are placed in New York City, some of the Teacher for America Corps members may pursue their master's degrees at Bank Street College.
