Information for International Students

Students from countries other than the United States are welcome at Bank Street. International students must meet the admissions criteria listed above; they must also provide translations of transcripts and records, and validate that they have completed the equivalent of a United States undergraduate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. All documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations.

International students must also complete an Application for a Form I-20. This document, which can be obtained from the Admissions Office, affirms that a student has the financial resources to attend Bank Street. Unfortunately, financial aid through Bank Street College is not available to our international students.

All students whose first language is not English, or who have taken their prior education in a non-English-speaking university, must demonstrate proficiency in English by obtaining a score of at least 600 (paper-based total), 250 (computer-based total), or 100 (Internet-based total) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Official score reports should be sent to Bank Street College. Our Institution Code is 2035.

To obtain a TOEFL bulletin, prospective students should contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or write to:

TOEFL Services
Educational Testing Service
PO Box 6151
Princeton, NJ 08541-6151

Prospective students may also visit the Educational Testing Service Web Site, www.ets.org/toefl, for more information.

Students without permanent residency or work authorization in the United States are generally not eligible for permanent or professional teacher certification in New York State, though they may be eligible for time-limited certifications (such as initial teacher certification).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Form I-20 and how do I get one?
The Form I-20 is a government record that certifies that you are eligible for F-1 Foreign Student status here in the United States.  Bank Street College will issue a Form I-20 to you once you have completed the admissions process and provide all necessary documentation. Please contact Ash Kherdekar for further information.

Who can study at Bank Street?
Students planning to attend Bank Street full-time should come into the United States on an F-1 visa. However, nonimmigrants coming to Bank Street on other visa types (except for B and F-2 visas) may pursue studies here as a "secondary activity."

Can international students work on campus?
Yes, F-1 visa students may work on campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the school year.

Please contact Ash Kherdekar, Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions, for additional information regarding international student applications.
