Leadership in Community-Based Learning

Rima Shore, Director: 212-875-4478

Master of Science in Education: 30 credits
This 30-credit Leadership in Community-Based Learning program prepares flexible, creative, and responsive leaders for a wide range of leadership positions within community-based learning organizations, including before and after school, summer, Saturday and other similar programs designed to enrich and expand learning opportunities for children and youth.

This program may also be appropriate for international candidates and those who do not need state certification and are seeking a flexible leadership program.

Through this program, candidates gain depth in understanding human development, organizational leadership, the social context, and curriculum. They also benefit from direct supervision and advisement in their own work setting.

New York State Department of Education approval is pending.

Certification
This program does not lead to certification.

Admissions Requirements
Applicants are typically those who have experience in after-school or youth development programs, or in other community-based organizations.

Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement
Students in advisement participate in regular small-group conferences with their advisor. These seminars include the exchange and analysis of ongoing professional experiences and provide a forum for integrating theory and practice. Throughout your term of fieldwork, your advisor will visit you in your setting once each month.

Integrative Master's Project
Before graduating, candidates complete an independent study (master's thesis), seminar-based master's project, directed essay or portfolio. Your choice will depend on your own goals and learning style. This project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest to you, or to weave together the threads and understandings of your Bank Street graduate experience.
