Master of Science in Education: 42 credits Earn your master's degree in just over two years by completing course work during July sessions for three summers and graduating at the end of the third July. During the two academic years, you will work in your own classroom at your current school site with a Bank Street College faculty advisor working with you on your professional growth and development. Through collaboration with your Bank Street advisor and with other graduate students, you will develop your skills as a teacher and as an educational leader, modeling creative ways to engage children fully in mathematical reasoning.
You will develop skills to help you and fellow teachers collaborate on curriculum planning, instructional approaches, and new assessment strategies in mathematics. You will become a resource for other staff members within your school who are interested in increasing their skills in mathematics instruction.
Your courses will be in three areas of study:
- Mathematics curriculum development
- Staff development, the school change process, and leadership
- Integrated mathematics courses
Certification The program leads to New York State School Building Leader certification. To be eligible for certification, students must also have completed three years of classroom teaching, nursery through twelfth grade. For students who hold initial teaching certification in New York State, the program also leads to New York State professional certification.
Students may take five additional credits in school district leadership (SDL) beyond the requirements for the School Building Leader (SBL) and be eligible for both SBL and SDL certifications. These five one-credit courses may be taken as electives within the basic Leadership for Educational Change program, or may be taken over-and-above SBL program requirements. To qualify for each certificate, candidates must pass the corresponding state assessment.
Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement During the two academic years intervening between the summer terms, students engage in guided field assignments at their home sites. Through Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement students practice leadership activities in their work settings and, with guidance, synthesize theory and practice.
Admissions Requirements Most prospective graduate students are experienced teachers. Preference is given to those who have been teaching for at least three years.
