Leadership for Educational Change: Focus on Special Education

Gil Schmerler, Director: 212-875-4709

Master of Science in Education: 39 credits
Master of Education: 30-36 credits
Prepare for opportunities and challenges ahead as, increasingly, schools are held accountable for the success of all students--including those with special needs. This program, an option within the Leadership for Educational Change program, is especially designed for those who want to be ready to reform and rejuvenate real education for real children in special, general and inclusive settings.

The Focus on Special Education option is especially designed for those who look forward to ensuring success for diverse student populations. Through the program you will prepare to supervise and support teachers who need insights and solutions based on today's understandings of how children learn.

We offer both a 39-credit program leading to a master of science in education, and, for those who already have a prior master's degree in education, a 36-credit program leading to the advanced master of education degree.

Certification
The program leads to New York State School Building Leader (SBL) certification. To be eligible for certification, candidates must have successfully completed three years of teaching, pupil personnel service work, or administration in N-12 settings.

Students may take five additional credits in school district leadership (SDL) beyond the requirements for the School Building Leader (SBL) and be eligible for both SBL and SDL certifications. These five one-credit courses may be taken as electives within the basic Leadership for Educational Change program, or may be taken over-and-above SBL program requirements. To qualify for each certificate, candidates must pass the corresponding state assessment.

Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement
Through supervised fieldwork/advisement, candidates practice leadership activities in their work settings and, with guidance, develop the ability to synthesize theory and practice.

Admissions Requirements
Applicants for leadership programs typically are experienced teachers or leaders in schools with grades ranging from nursery through twelfth. Preference is given to those who have been teaching for at least two years. It is strongly suggested that students complete a course in developmental variations before beginning this master's degree.
