Living in New York

See our information on Housing.

Although Bank Street is a small school, its location offers one of the world's largest and most varied campuses-- New York City. Filled with residents and visitors from around the world, the city is a diverse and exciting place to study, teach, and live. New York has parks, rivers, and more museums, theaters, concert halls, restaurants and attractions than any other city in the world. You could spend a year here and still not experience the entire range of neighborhoods and cultures.

Bank Street College's main building is located on 112th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. In this largely residential neighborhood, aspects of small-town life coalesce with big-city living. The College is only a half a block away from Broadway, one of the most famous thoroughfares in the world.

Bank Street's location offers proximity to some of the city's other major academic institutions and an array of cultural organizations. A block away is St. John the Divine (the largest Gothic cathedral in North America) which sponsors frequent concerts and lectures and boasts a fascinating architectural history. Just across Central Park is Museum Mile, which includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Frick Collection, just to name a few. Only a short bus or subway ride away from the College are Lincoln Center, the theatres of Broadway, and the shops and restaurants of Greenwich Village.

If you tire of the city streets, you can get a feel of the country by strolling through Riverside Park, which stretches along the Hudson River and is only a block away from Bank Street. In summer and winter, the park is full of students and families.

No matter how you choose to spend your time in the city, one thing is for certain: you will never run out of things to do.
