Second Certification Master's Degree Programs and Course Sequences

If you hold a valid New York State initial certification, or you are in the process of obtaining such a certification, any of the master's programs listed here will help change your initial to professional certification.

Special Education Programs

These single certification programs are for those who wish to be certified to teach students with disabilities, and who possess general education certification. 

• Infant and Family Development and Early Intervention / Early Childhood Special Education
• Early Childhood Special Education
• Childhood Special Education
• Middle School Special Education
• Autism Spectrum Annotation (course sequence)

Literacy Specialization Programs

Earn certification as a literacy specialist. Prior classroom certification is required.

• Teaching Literacy: Focus on Classroom Teaching
• Teaching Literacy: Focus on Clinical Teaching 
• Advanced Literacy Specialization (for those who already posses a master's degree)

Dual Language / Bilingual Education

Individuals fluent in Spanish who hold certification in general education earn certification to teach students with disabilities.

• Dual Language / Bilingual Middle School Special Education
• Bilingual Extension Certificate (course sequence)

Social Work Dual Degree Programs

Candidates apply separately to Bank Street and to Columbia School of Social Work.

Leadership programs lead to NY Certification as a School Building Leader unless otherwise indicated.

• Leadership for Educational Change: Focus on Special Education
• Principals Institute (through the Leadership Preparation Institute for qualifying New York City public school teachers)
• Early Childhood Leadership*
• Leadership in Mathematics Education*
• Teacher Leader in Mathematics Education*
• Leadership in Technology and the Arts: Creative Writing Focus* with Sarah Lawrence College
• Leadership in Technology and the Arts: Digital Media Focus* with Parsons The New School for Design
• Leadership in Technology and the Arts: Visual Arts Focus* with Parsons The New School for Design
• Leadership in Museum Education (geared to professionals in museums and/or cultural institutions;
  does not lead to NY certification)
• Leadership in Community-Based Learning (for those who have experience in after-school or youth development programs, or in other community-based organizations; does not lead to NY certification)
• School District Leadership (A non-degree course sequence for those with a master's degree in educational leadership and who have previously qualified for SAS or SBL certification; leads to NY certification as a School District Leader)

*Indicates Summer Leadership Programs

Note: Many graduate programs include three components: course work; supervised fieldwork and advisement; and an Integrative Master's Project (IMP) or professional seminar. There are four academic terms: Fall, Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2.
