Second Certification Master's Degree Programs and Course Sequences

If you hold a valid New York State initial certification, or you are in the process of obtaining such a certification, any of the master's programs listed here will help change your initial to professional certification.


General Education Programs

Deepen your understanding of meaningful curriculum that actively engages children.


Special Education Programs

These single certification programs are for those who wish to be certified to teach students with disabilities, and who possess general education certification. 


Literacy Specialization Programs

Earn certification as a literacy specialist. Prior classroom certification is required.


Dual Language / Bilingual Education

Individuals fluent in Spanish who hold certification in general education earn certification to teach students with disabilities.


Social Work Dual Degree Programs

Candidates apply separately to Bank Street and to Columbia School of Social Work.


Leadership Programs

Leadership programs lead to NY Certification as a School Building Leader unless otherwise indicated.

Note: Many graduate programs include three components: course work; supervised fieldwork and advisement; and an Integrative Master's Project (IMP) or professional seminar. There are four academic terms: Fall, Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2.
