Facilitating Successful Group Processes
This inquiry will explore the ways that teachers facilitate and support group processes through cooperative learning, constructive controversy, or advisories. Participants will each develop and implement an inquiry unit of social studies designed to engage groups of their own students. Topics might include immigration, the experiences of a particular ethnic group, or community centered curriculum. Collaborative attention will be focused on identifying creative ways to facilitate successful resolution of emergent issues, support individuals within each group, and deepen understanding of group process.
Room 424
- 02/Th/7:00-9:00
Dates: 1/8, 2/19, 3/19, 4/23 (Please note this course starts BEFORE the official start date of the term.)

Museums as Places of Civic Engagement
This inquiry will engage students working in museums or related cultural institutions in exploring opportunities for civic engagement through partnerships with schools, after school programs, or community based organizations, or through programs or exhibitions that invite dialogue and exchange of perspectives. Students will identify essential implementation strategies and develop a program or approach that contributes to positioning a museum as a member of a civil society. Alternatively, they may identify challenges to an existing partnership or collaboration and look for ways to deal constructively with those challenges.

Developing a Curriculum of Experience: Inquiry into Relevant Curriculum Design
This inquiry focuses on developing a "curriculum of experience" based on the work of Dewey and Lucy Sprague Mitchell's vision of children learning in field-based conditions. Theoretical foundations and real world investigations in the arts, sciences, and/or social studies will be linked, using project-based, place-based, and experiential learning design. Each participant develops interdisciplinary learning experiences connecting classroom, community, and cultural sites (museums, parks, historical sites). Students will fieldtest their designs, and examine implications for evaluation of children's learning. All components of curriculum design will culminate in individual final curriculum design projects that will be shared with the group and presented to a wider audience.
Room 408/409
- 04/T/7:00-9:00
Dates: 1/27, 4/7, other by phone/video

Creating Supportive Relationships With Families With Infants and Toddlers
This inquiry will investigate how to create supporting relationships (parent/child/teacher/staff). How are trust and collaboration developed between diverse perspectives and needs? Interviews of parents and staff, literature review and research, narrative and analysis of students' interactions with families, and child/family study are potential ways of exploring this question. Two meetings will be in a group with the instructor. Two meetings will be via confernece call with video.
Room 421

A Literature Program for the Classroom
Each participant in this inquiry will use his or her integrated knowledge and experience to design a developmentally appropriate literature program. Components will include choosing an age level as the focus for the project, selecting materials, developing a lesson sequence, and constructing sample lesson plans with relevant activities. An assessment component will be incorporated as part of the project.

Exploring Educational Practices to Support Students on the Autism Spectrum
This collaborative inquiry group will highlight areas that students would like to explore in order to enhance the educational support given to students on the autism spectrum. Areas of support include classroom design; curriculum strategies; strategies to assess learning; and supports to their students, their peers and/or families. All the participating students will examine an area with reference to the special learning, language and/or social challenges of these students and discuss their findings and intervention which might be applied in a family or school setting.

Utilizing Instructional Technology in the Classroom
21st century classrooms will have wonderful opportunities to engage learners and enrich the learning process through technology. Educators will have at hand an interactive Web, social networking, virtual worlds and a whole range of multimedia technologies, software and freeware with which to access, create and share knowledge. This inquiry will support participants in identifying, creating or applying instructional technology in the classroom to support diverse learners and/or to develop and sustain professional learning communities. Expertise in technology is helpful, but not a pre-requisite, to investigation of options, design, selection and/or pilot-testing of a do-able project that expands the teaching-learning process through an infusion of some aspect of technology.

Folklore, Oral History and the Arts: Developing a Curriculum for Cultural Competence
"Cultural competence refers to the process by which individuals and systems respond respectfully and effectively to people of all ethnic backgrounds, languages, religions...and other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes and affirms...the worth of individuals...and communities and protects and preserves the dignity of each." [NASW Standard] Using folklore, oral history, and arts-based methodologies, participants will develop multimedia curriculum incorporating community lore, oral history, music and storytelling to strengthen requisite knowledge and value-sets for cultural competence in schools, museums, hospitals and other educational settings. Final projects will be included in FEAST (http://streetcat.bankstreet.edu/html/feast.html) a resource of the Bank Street College Library.
