Leadership in the Arts: School Leadership with a Visual Arts Focus
A Collaborative Program with Parsons School of Design

Cathleen Wiggins, Director: 212-875-4529

Master of Science in Education: 42 credits
Parsons School of Design and Bank Street College of Education have designed this special master's degree program to meet the particular needs of art teachers seeking professional development in educational leadership.

During the month of July for three consecutive summers, graduate students take courses at both colleges. The program's 42 credits consist of 18 credits focused on your professional development in supervision and administration, 15 credits in studio art, and 9 credits of supervised fieldwork/advisement.

Each summer you will have a combination of leadership and studio art courses. The leadership portion provides you with the knowledge and skill base you will need for the role of supervisor or administrator in your school or in community settings. The studio art portion gives you a forum for expanding your art skills and knowledge in drawing, printmaking and career possibilities in the world of art and design. As part of the program, you will visit artists' studios, museums, and galleries.

Certification
The program leads to New York State School Building Leader certification. To be eligible for certification, students must also have completed three years of classroom teaching, nursery through twelfth grade. For students who hold initial teaching or art education certification in New York State, the program also leads to New York State professional certification.

Students may take five additional credits in school district leadership (SDL) beyond the requirements for the School Building Leader (SBL) and be eligible for both SBL and SDL certifications. These five one-credit courses may be taken as electives within the basic Leadership for Educational Change program, or may be taken over-and-above SBL program requirements. To qualify for each certificate, candidates must pass the corresponding state assessment.

Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement
During the two intervening academic years, students engage in guided field assignments at their home sites. Through supervised fieldwork/advisement students practice leadership activities in their work settings and, with guidance, develop the ability to synthesize theory and practice.

Admissions Requirements
Most prospective graduate students are experienced art teachers. Preference is given to those who have been teaching for at least two years.
