Bank Street Head Start views curriculum as the interaction of children with their total environment, which includes other children, adults, and materials. In light of this definition, parents are involved in their child≠s educational curriculum from the moment of their child≠s birth. Bank Street Head Start is thus naturally joined together with parents as partners in their child≠s growth and development.
This partnership allows everyone involved to:
Each parent has different needs and styles of learning. We try to provide flexible and varied opportunities for interaction with us through one to one contacts and in both small and large groups. Monthly classroom meetings and workshops, which revolve around the needs of parents and children, are a great way to get parents involved in our school. Some past workshops and meeting topics include our Parent Orientation, Curriculum Night, Kindergarten Informational Fair, Learning Through Play Workshop and a Conflict Resolution Workshop. The more teachers get to know parents, the more workshops we can offer to meet their specific needs. We also offer many community building experiences for parents to participate in such as, our family nights (get-to-gethers), all school sing-a-longs and parent talent night.
Bank Street Head Start invites parents to participate as much as they can in their child≠s school. Parents are recruited to work as substitute teachers in the classroom throughout the school year. After attending a volunteer training and submitting the required documents, parents will begin to learn more about Bank Street Head Start's philosophy and their role in the classroom.
