Position Vacancy - Music Teacher (1st - 4th Grade)


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field (combination of piano, guitar and percussion skills and choral experience, as well as classroom music).
  • Master's degree desirable.
  • Three years teaching experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and an interest in an interdisciplinary approach to education.
  • A familiarity with songs and movement games from many cultures.
  • A full knowledge base in Orff, Kodaly, or Dalcroze pedagogy.


Functions and Responsibilities

Work with Children: The teacher is responsible for teaching music for grades 1-4, planning to meet the needs of large and small groups of children as well as individual children.

Curriculum Development: The teacher is responsible for developing curriculum in music based on children's developmental capacities and needs. A multicultural understanding must be reflected in the curriculum developed for children.

Work with Environment and Materials: The teacher is responsible for designing, organizing, sharing and maintaining the music room and the auditorium.

Staff: An interest in his/her own professional growth is expected. Each teacher meets bi-weekly with their curriculum coordinator and participates in weekly age-group meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings after school. As part of a diagnostic team, teachers work with specialists (reading, math, psychologist), and meet with parents, tutors and therapists.

Visitors: In addition to modeling a Bank Street approach to education by having daily visitors and observers in the classroom, teachers may be asked to speak to visiting groups. They often serve as consultants for other College Divisions as well as for outside groups.
