In this course, students will read about and discuss elements of Salsa history as it also relates to immigration, U.S. foreign policy, popular culture and urban affairs. Students will examine how Salsa deals with social issues through its lyrical content. Newsletter
The goal of the newsletter class is to teach journalism skills and provide students with a voice to reach and influence their community. While traditional journalism tactics will be taught, they are merely a foundation upon which the students can decide how they want to express both their individuality and their ideas of the world. It is important to realize there is no set mould for this class; rather, students will determine the content, structure, and layout of the publication. Students will be encouraged to take an interactive role not only in individual projects, but also in a group staff to create a product that everyone is proud of.

The READ Foundation (Community Service)
Teens lead...Children read
The Reading Excellence and Discovery (READ) Foundation serves struggling readers in kindergarten, first, and second grade. READ trains highly capable NYC teenagers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to their younger peers in After School programs around New York City. Working alongside other NYC teens, tutors will be able to fulfill community service requirements, gain summer employment, create professional relationships, and experience the rewards of teaching and serving young children. Participants will be assigned to a program site and will be trained in the use of the research-based curriculum, Reading for All Learners (RALP).
