I-LEAD Program fundraising for "Students on Ice" trip to Antarctica
The Institute for Leadership, Excellence and Academic Development (I-LEAD), is a program of Bank Street College's Division of Continuing Education. I-LEAD is a college preparatory program for students attending inner-city high schools in New York City. Our students live in communities across NYC: (the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, and Washington Heights) many of which are recognized as low-income and underserved. Over 90% of our students are Latino and African-American. I-LEAD seeks to close the 'achievement gap' by identifying bright young people from underrepresented groups early in their high school careers and providing them with the resources they need to stay on the path to high achievement. It prepares students to become competitive applicants to highly selective colleges and universities by providing a nurturing environment, challenging academic courses and opportunities for leadership development. The accomplishments of the first two graduating classes speak to the strength of the I-LEAD program: 100% of the class of 2004 and 2005 are currently enrolled in college. An exceptional 95% percent gained admission to one of the 173 colleges and universities considered to be 'highly' and 'most' competitive (based on Barron's Profiles of American Colleges, 2005). 18% were accepted at Ivy League schools and 5% were accepted to very competitive schools. I-LEAD is collaborating with the Canadian-based Students on Ice program to send five students and one teacher/chaperone to Antarctica in December 2005. A pioneer in experiential education, the mandate of Students on Ice is to provide youth with a life-changing educational opportunity that helps them foster a new understanding and respect for our planet. In 2003, Students on Ice was awarded the prestigious Michael J. Smith Award for Science Promotion, an annual award given to groups that have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of science. We expect that this first trip in December will set the groundwork for establishing a long-term partnership between Students on Ice and the I-LEAD program. The cost for the December trip follows. (Thanks to the generosity of Students on Ice these are discounted 10% from the regular cost and include airfare from NYC.)
Both Students on Ice and I-LEAD believe in providing students with unique educational experiences that will challenge the way in which they perceive the world. Strong academic knowledge and a firm skill base is important, but both organizations also recognize active citizenship, community service, global experiences, ecological stewardship, and the development of a social conscience as fundamental to the education of today's youth. The aim of the Antarctic Expedition is not to simply provide students with a 'trip' to a unique destination; it is rather to give students an opportunity to have an aesthetic experience in some of the most wild and awe-inspiring ecosystems in the world. Ultimately, the goal of this expedition is for students to experience a transformative connection with Nature - a connection that changes the way they understand and act in the world. The participating I-LEAD students and staff will serve as Ambassadors for the I-LEAD and Bank Street communities and they will share experiences via a daily expedition website tracking the journey and presentations. For more information regarding contributions for this exciting partnership, please contact Becky Hamilton, I-LEAD Advisor at (212) 961-3381 or email rhamilton@bankstreet.edu. Sponsor benefits will include association, branding, media, website, launch event, tax-receipt and more. Ideally, our aim will be to secure a long-term sponsor(s) who sees the benefits of our collaborative efforts and who believes in the overall development of today's youth through dynamic, leadership-based educational experiences. |
