Welcome to The Kerlin Science Institute
The mission of the Kerlin Institute of the Bank Street College of Education is to strengthen the teaching of the natural and environmental sciences in public schools and further enhance the Bank Street School for Children's role as a demonstration site for exemplary teaching practice. The Institute was established by the Sally Kerlin Endowment for the Teaching of the Natural and Environmental Sciences, through a generous gift from Gilbert and Sally Kerlin, who was an alumna, class of 1936, and a Life Trustee.
The goal of the Kerlin Institute is to help teachers think of science not as an established body of knowledge they must convey to their students, but rather as an active process of inquiry in which their students can participate. To foster this perspective on science, Institute participants will take intensive college-level inquiry-based science courses in the summer. These courses are designed to strengthen the knowledge base of science teachers while modeling the inquiry-based learning we hope they will use in their classrooms. The courses will be followed by monthly seminars and classroom visitations during the academic year to support the participating teachers in developing science curriculum in their classrooms.
