Literacy Guide

During the past 100 years, the Bank Street College of Education has been educating teachers about how reading, writing, and language development are integrative processes developed within a social context. Bank Street College is frequently referred to as “America’s most trusted name in early childhood education,” and is proud to host the Literacy Guide.

Bank Street College places emphasis on early childhood education, and strives to ignite the spark in children leading them to a lifetime of literacy learning. Bank Street’s approach imbues young children with a curiosity about the world they live in and a love of books.

The Literacy Guide provides volunteer tutors, teachers and parents with ways to engage young children in reading, writing and language experiences that develop their abilities and foster their interests. A variety of information ranging from background information on literacy and early reading, sample lesson plans, activities, information on other literacy and reading resources. and working with young children whose first language is not English can be found in this guide.
