All of the programs of the Leadership Preparation Institute are aligned with the New York City Leadership competencies and the RATE (Regents Accreditation of Teacher Education) standards for educational leadership programs. Principals InstituteEstablished in 1989, the Principals Institute is committed to the preparation of a diverse cadre of urban school leaders. The Principals Institute is a reduced-tuition, thirty-six (36)-credit program leading to a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in school leadership and New York State certification as a School Building Leader (SBL). Students are admitted in cohorts, and the Program is generally completed in 18 months. Principals Institute - Federal Education Leadership Fellows Program (FELF)Program This 36-credit program, leading to a Master's Degree and NYS Certification as a School Building Leader (SBL), is designed to prepare aspiring school leaders to effect change in high needs (low performing) NYC public schools. The Federal Education Leadership Fellows Program will include a new curricular approach utilizing online simulations grounded in the daily challenges school leaders face. The program will include a cohort of like-minded peers and ongoing support once in the assistant principal role. Partial tuition reimbursement and performance bonuses will be available. Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leader Academy (BETLA)Established in 2001, the Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leader Academy was created to instill leadership skills in exemplary teachers, who then work to support fellow teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs). The program is a collaborative effort with the New York State Education Department. BETLA Teacher Leaders refine their own classroom practice as they collaborate with other teachers to support high achievement for ELL students. In addition, BETLA Teacher Leaders establish model classrooms that are used as lab sites for bilingual and ESL instruction. Students take 15 graduate credits and receive a Bank Street Teacher Leader Certificate.
