Adventure Based Counseling

adventure2.jpg:
Adventure Based Counseling aims to increase the number of boys who are referred to LPP and retain through high school those that join us. The key to boys' ongoing participation is to help them develop strong, positive peer connections with other young people in our program. Adventure counseling is based on building positive peer group supports through a series of expeditionary learning and community service experiences. Adventure counseling also helps young people improve decision-making skills, and develop a better understanding of their own locus of control. It has three main components. The first begins in the summer after 7th or 8th grade with a five-week adventure in the city program (Adventure n the City). The second component follows up during the 9th grade school year with three weekend wilderness trips and participation in the ongoing LPP program. The third component takes place the summer after 9th grade and includes four weeks of skill building and an eight-day wilderness adventure. Adventure therapy allows us to address the important tasks children in the early adolescent stage of development are facing; namely, self-esteem, positive socialization, peer group formation, and self-reflection.
