Is there a fee for taking the NBPTS exam?

    Yes. The application fee is $2,300 beginning in the Spring 2000.


Are there scholarships or other financial assistance available to applicants?

    Yes. In New York State, there are two types of awards available to candidates:
    The New York State Candidate Fee Subsidy Program and the Albert Shanker Grants.

What happens if I do not pass some part of the exam?

    Candidates may "bank" entries until they have successfully passed each portion of the exam. In other words, successful entries may be stored, or put in the bank and counted towards the final score.

What benefits are there for teachers who achieve National Board Certification?

    There are monetary as well as professional benefits to NBCTs. For example, in New York City, National Board Certified Teachers can qualify for a salary differential of approximately $3700 in lieu of 30 semester hours of approved credits of college or university study.

    In New York State, Board Certified teachers may receive annual salary increments up to $5000 per year for the life of the certificate. For further information, consult the New York State Education Department website : nysed.gov/tcert/homepage.htm

NBCTs serve as mentor teachers, facilitators and forum leaders in a variety of local, regional and national institutes.

What is the term of the certificate?

    The National Board certificate is valid for a period of 10 years. After that time, candidates must re-apply to renew their certificates.


When are applications due?

    December 1, 2000. Applications are available June 1, 2000. Completed portfolios are due by April 17, 2001. For further details, consult the NBPTS website: nbpts.org
