The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation is an independent foundation that began in 1979 as the result of a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Newcombe, a Philadelphia philanthropist. The Foundation continues Mrs. Newcombe's support of students as they pursue degrees in higher education by maintaining scholarship and fellowship programs that are in keeping with her lifelong interests.

The Newcombe Foundation funds a major program of graduate fellowships in the humanities and social sciences at the doctoral dissertation level. These fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical and religious values in all areas of human endeavor. Awards are based on a rigorous national competition, and the program is administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

The Newcombe Foundation established Newcombe Scholarship Programs for three designated groups of students: mature women students, students with disabilities, and disadvantaged students at Presbyterian Colleges. The colleges and universities that are awarded grants from the Foundation are responsible for selection of recipients and scholarship administration according to the Foundation's guidelines.

The Newcombe Endowed Scholarship Fund at Bank Street is intended to benefit the College's mature women students. The Foundation's new grant to Bank Street recognizes the excellent degree programs and counseling services the College provides for this group of students. By providing additional financial aid, it may help to mitigate the difficult economic circumstances many of these women face as they prepare for new careers. The Newcombe Scholarship Endowment Grant also acknowledges Bank Street's caring and consistent administration of previous Newcombe Scholarship grants.
