Did you know from the start that you wanted to be a teacher? Not everyone does.
The Need for Change Some of the best teachers do not begin their careers in education. They start working in business, finance, law or publishing, and then, after careful reflection and sometimes grueling self-sacrifice, they decide to begin a new career as educators. These individuals offer a unique perspective on teaching and learning. Many become outstanding teachers, deeply valued by colleagues, parents and the children whom they teach.
Scholarship: The Door to the Future It is not easy to switch careers or return to school after years of pursuing another path. Many aspiring teachers face the challenge of paying high tuition while trying to earn a living.
In fact, many women who pursue education as a second career study part-time because of the high cost of tuition combined with busy work schedules and conflicting family commitments. Bank Street recognizes that scholarships play an enormous role in a student's ability to return to school. However, the College's endowment is relatively small and Bank Street is unable to provide to all students with proven financial need.
Rising to the Challenge The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, a long-time benefactor of Bank Street College, recognizes the challenge faced specifically by mature career-changing women (over 25 years of age), and has established a special scholarship fund at Bank Street College for these students.
The Newcombe Foundation is so committed to this cause that they have proposed a new ambitious $100,000 challenge grant to augment the existing Newcombe Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund at Bank Street College on the condition that it is matched with $150,000 in gifts from Bank Street alumni and friends within a two-year period. As a result, the existing Newcombe Foundation endowment will increase by $250,000 providing an additional $10,000 annually for scholarships designated for mature career-changing women in perpetuity.
