For Immediate Release BANK STREET COLLEGE PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE ACORN AWARD New York, NY, April 18, 2005 -Bank Street College President Dr. Augusta Souza Kappner received the Golden Acorn Award from the Bronx Community College Child Development Center, Inc., at the Golden Acorn Awards Luncheon, held on April 15, 2005. Dr. Kappner, who grew up in the South Bronx, is one of the most acclaimed educators in higher education today. Bronx Community College Child Development Center is one of the first child care centers established at CUNY. The BCC Child Development Center, which marked its 32nd anniversary this year, sponsors activities for children that are educational, are fun and exciting, develop skills and confidence, and inspire new generations of achievers. BCC's Child Development Center has a licensed facility for preschoolers. In addition, it operates and oversees a licensed school-age program that serves approximately 100 children per semester, offering quality early care and education at an affordable price for parents who are BCC students, many of whom are from low-income, single-parent homes. "When you think about it, without childcare, many student/ parents wouldn't be able to study or gain skills that could take them into the workplace or onto four-year colleges," says Jorge Saenz-de-Viteri, Executive Director of the Center. "The Center is proud of its record of assisting and training approximately over 150 groups of individuals who have become licensed Family Child Care Providers. We also have a Family Child Care Network of more than 35 licensed providers who have the capacity to care for over 325 children at any given time," he added.
