BANK STREET KIDS READ SHAKESPEARE AT MORNINGSIDE BOOKSTORE Monday, July 11, 2005 at 2 p.m.
New York, July 8-- Children from Bank Street's summer camp will perform a reading of Shakespearean plays at the Morningside Bookstore located at Broadway and 114 Street in New York City, July 11 at 2 p.m. They will read selections from Hamlet, As You Like It, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The children, ages 10-14, have a little over a month to prepare for performances held throughout the summer. The group's next stage performance of Hamlet will be July 27, at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Bank Street College, 610 West 112th Street, in New York City.
The Director of the Shakespeare program, John Regis, speaks about the educational benefits of each Shakespeare play. "Immersing oneself in Shakespeare by actually acting out the parts is one of the best ways to enlighten kids to the brilliance of his writing."
Cookie Levine, Director of the Summer Camp agrees. "As these kids learn the discipline of acting through the great works of Shakespeare, they are transformed by the lifelong lessons Shakespeare expresses in all of his works," she says.
The Bank Street Summer Camp is open to children ages 4 through 15. The programs include art, theater, sports, and travel camps. In addition, there is a swim program and extended-day enrichment activities.
The philosophy of the Bank Street School for Children is reflected in the summer programs. Bank Street is a child-centered, diverse, and nurturing community. Many of the staff members return year after year and they hold a deep commitment to the safety, growth, and positive experience of the campers.
The seven-week program is designed to offer children an opportunity to explore New York City and its vast resources, and to learn and play in a relaxed setting.
