Preschool Language and Literacy (Ages 2 - 5 Years)

Learn how to recognize and implement developmentally appropriate strategies to support early literacy development in the classroom. Classroom activities, such as age-appropriate experiences with books and writing will be covered. Emphasis is placed on speaking and listening skills, as well as reading and writing readiness. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to select, plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate early literacy experiences.
Instructor
Amy Flynn, MEd, has been the Director of the Bank Street Family Center since 1998. In addition, over the past 3 years Ms. Flynn has provided staff development training as a consultant for the National Head Start Family Literacy Center, presented at the Bank Street Infancy Institute conference in New York City been guest lecture for the past 6 years for a summer institute in Early Childhood Special Education at CW Post College, a trainer for a nation project Special Quest Birth to Five, been a curriculum writer for the New York State Early Intervention Training Program and co-authored a chapter on supervision in a Zero to Three Book: Learning to Read the World (Zero to Three Press, 2006). Ms. Flynn has her BS in Early Childhood Education and Psychology from the University of Bridgeport and her MS in Early Childhood Education and Special Education and her MEd in Supervision and Administration from Bank Street College.

The workshops/courses are asynchronous, that is, participants work at times that suit them best; however, there will be firm weekly due dates for assignments. The course instructor will act both as a leader and a mentor by offering regular support, suggestions, and direction.
