FIRE SAFETY PROGRAM
Emergency Action for All Occupants Upon Discovery of a Fire and/or Sounding of the Fire Alarm

  • Alert those in the immediate area. Alert the Floor Wardens if available, and Security as soon as practicable.
    Security Contact Numbers
: Bank Street South ˆ x4411; Bank Street North ˆ x3300; MSM Front desk: 917-493-4700
  • Notify the Floor Wardens and Security by phone or nearest warden/callbox if you have someone who is mobility impaired on the floor and that you are proceeding and waiting for assistance in the nearest stairwell - the designated area of refuge.  Ask Security whether this is a real emergency or a fire drill.(Warden Boxes are energized 24/7 and go directly to all security desks. Press "Talk" to Talk, Release "Talk" to Listen. See picture for reference and floor plans for general locations.)
  • After giving your floor and stairwell location, remain calm and quiet and wait for further directions and /or Security/maintenance staff or the Fire department to arrive to help.
  • Close doors to contain the fire, if this is the case and it‚s possible to do so
  • Activate the building fire alarm pull stations typically found near stairwell exit doors.
  • Do not attempt to fight a fire unless it is small in nature.
  • Close, do not lock, the doors behind you.
  • Remain calm and walk to the nearest exit. (Please ask your floor warden to show you your designated fire exit, if you are unsure.) If path is blocked by heat or smoke, proceed to alternate exit. Know the locations of all fire exits on your floor. Do not use the elevators.
  • Leave the building and walk at least 50 feet away from the building entrances so as not to interfere with the fire department activities.

Emergency Action By Fire Wardens (Primary and/or Alternate)

  • In addition to the above steps, every room, bathroom and stairwell must be checked to ensure that no one is left behind.
  • Evacuate all occupants by directing and pointing to nearest possible exit routes.
  • Where necessary, Fire Wardens are to summon Security personnel for help, evacuate to nearest stairwell landing and remain with individuals with mobility impairments until Security staff and/or the Fire Department arrives.
  • Wardens are to be cognizant of other individuals with special needs, such as epileptic prone occupants, and follow the procedure mentioned above.
