In keeping with its advocacy position for all children, during the 60's
and 70's, and largely in response to the Dick and Jane school readers,
Bank Street produced its own multicultural, urban-based readers. The first
was a series of about half a dozen books, called the Bank Street Readers.
These books revolutionized reading programs. They reflected the life experiences
of children living in an urban, multi-racial environment and garnered
widespread attention from major press including the New York Times
and Ebony Magazine.
