Curriculum: Library at the School for Children

Library in the Upper School

Thanks to flexible scheduling, Upper School children have access to the library resources at all times. The Upper School teachers work cooperatively with the librarian to tailor research with classroom curriculum. The librarian provides reference material for classroom use to support current curriculum needs. The librarian also provides readers references to individual children. Students continue to work on their independent study skills in accessing, locating, evaluating, and synthesizing information. Students use the library independently to research, study, read, select books, or work on projects.

The 10/11s and 11/12s continue to refine their critical thinking and public speaking skills by reading books eligible for a mock Newbery award. The librarian asks upper school children to evaluate new books for possible inclusion in the annual Best Children's Books of the Year, a title published by the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street.
