Curriculum: Mathematics at the School for Children

Mathematics at Bank Street is thought of both as a language and a tool. As a language, it can be used to summarize patterns we see or to express relationships we investigate, both in the real world and in the world of abstract mathematics. As a tool, it is useful in dealing with problems we confront daily, whether we are measuring or buying a thing that we need. These two aspects of mathematics inform all our math curricula, and our goal is to help students develop strengths in both areas. We aim to educate students who can go out into the world and solve problems but can also appreciate the elegance of mathematical concepts and relationships and articulate these to others.

Our problem-centered and inquiry-based approach to math allows students to develop their own understanding of concepts and techniques. By setting a tone in which children ask questions, experiment and explore, teachers serve as guides during structured explorations where a wide range of materials is used. Problems are posed for students that actively engage them in the learning process. This approach develops confidence in students' ability to respond analytically and creatively to mathematical inquiry and problem-solving situations.
