Graduate School Alumni Class Notes

1964

Lee Bennett Hopkins (Cape Coral, FL) is the 15th winner of the 2009 NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children.  A distinguished poet, writer, and anthologist, Lee has created numerous books for children and adults.

1966

Eleanor Levin Trachtenberg (Dallas, TX) works at Dallas City Council as a Senior Affairs Representative to the Senior Affairs Commission. She is involved in developing a transportation program for seniors who are not able to drive. In addition, Ms. Trachtenberg works on affordable housing for seniors.

1972

Melinda M. Lyon (Los Angeles, CA) and her husband John have managed to combine their love of aviation and belief in education. John is the Executive Director of the charter school established by The Thomas W. Wathen Foundation at a small private airport in Riverside, CA. The charter school gives inner city school kids the opportunity to complete high school through learning the science of aviation. This past summer, Melinda and John "helped to fly several young people who had never left their neighborhoods to the big EAA Airshow in Oshkosh, WI. It was such a pleasure to see their excitement."

1974

Naomi Danis (Forest Hills, NY) is a managing editor of Lilith, the Jewish feminist quarterly magazine. In addition, she is the author of Splish-Splash, a BeginSmart board book illustrated by Elliot Kreloff.

1984

Alison H. Pepper (Washington, DC) works as a Senior Director of Accreditation Program Support at NAEYC. This new department will oversee outreach, training, marketing, and scholarships for the NAEYC Academy of Early Childhood Program Accreditation.

1985

Martha Sielman (Storrs, CT) has recently published Masters: Art Quilts: Major Works by Leading Artists (Lark Books, 2008). Publishers Weekly's review said: "Art quilts have long since moved from covering beds to hanging on walls, and this collection of 40 artists' works, gathered and introduced by Sielman, executive director of Studio Art Associates and an art quilter herself, is ample evidence why. Ranging from the United States and Canada through Europe to Israel, South Africa, Japan and New Zealand, these quilts show the beauty and imagination of fine art and a vast variety of styles and materials."

1987

Bonnie Harris (Peterborough, NH) is a Director of Connective Parenting. She founded The Parent Guidance Center in Peterborough, NH in 1990 (now renamed The Family Center), which is dedicated to parent education and support. Her book, When Your Kids Push Your Buttons (Warner Books, 2003), led to an appearance on The Today Show, Asia News broadcast from Singapore, an ABC broadcast in Australia, as well as radio and TV programs across the United States. The book made the New York Post's top ten list of best parenting books and has been published in six additional countries. Bonnie teaches Buttons workshops and speaks internationally on a variety of parenting topics as well as across the Internet.

1991

Carla Grant (New York, NY) has worked for 15 years as a librarian at the Northside Center for Child Development. Under her watchful eye, the Jane Allen Emil (JAE) Children's Library has become not only a place to read but also a space to entertain, create, and play.

1996

Anne Taggart (Summit, NJ) has developed a hands-on, art history curriculum for parents, grandparents, and caregivers who volunteer in the classroom. She would like to hear from Bank Street alums who have developed curriculum packages to discuss marketing and packaging decisions. Please email Anne at ataggart92@yahoo.com

1997

Kathleen Maggio (New York, NY) has just published a new book, Integrating Draping, Drafting, and Drawing (Fairchild Publications, 2009), which she co-authored with former Parsons School of Design instructor and author, Bina Abling. It is the first textbook of its kind to integrate these three fashion design disciplines, and does so by using a combination of photography and illustration. The book is aimed at entry-level fashion students as well as anyone interested in the basics of garment pattern development and fashion drawing.

2004

Elizabeth Jane Atack (Nashville, TN) runs a new Bringing Books to Life! Program, a preschool literacy program created by the Library in collaboration with early childhood educators, and which is centered around the Library's award-winning marionette shows.

2005

Hubert J Gordon (Laurelton, NY) is currently the principal at the International Community School.

2007

Cecilia Dubon Slesnick (Coral Gables, FL) is Vice President of Education at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida in Miami.

Alumni Marriages

Edgenie Rice Egerton- Warburton '97, of New York, NY, is happily re-married to Jamie Egerton-Warburton. The ceremony took place London, England. Edgenie's son and Jamie's twin daughters were in attendance.

Olivia Jones '05, of New York, NY, was married June 27, 2009 to Jeff Ramsey. Mrs. Ramsey is a kindergarten teacher in a French and English classroom at PS 58 in Brooklyn. Mr. Ramsey is a graphic designer and typographer in Brooklyn who does work for artists, galleries, and architectural books and magazines.

Courtney Vowels '06, and John Joseph Garnevicus, of Seattle, WA, were married on June 27, 2009. Ms. Vowels, who is the manager of school and teacher programs at the Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, WA, is keeping her name. Mr. Garnevicus teaches physics, mathematics and astronomy at Lakeside School, a high school in Seattle.

Meghan Marie Slattery '08, of Brooklyn, NY, was married on September 6, 2008 to Christopher John Patterson. Mrs. Patterson teaches fourth grade at Saint David's School in New York. Mr. Patterson is a research assistant for crude oil and natural gas markets at SCS Commodities, a brokerage firm in New York.

Clare Stuart McLean '08, and Peter Caleb Hedley, of New York, NY, were married on September 6, 2008. Mrs. Hedley is a kindergarten teacher at the Peck School in Morristown, NJ. Mr. Hedley is a broker in the Florham Park, NJ, office of C B Richard Ellis, the commercial real estate company.

Alumni Births

Jenny Barrington '03, and her husband Robert, of New York, NY, welcomed their first child, Robert Lee Barrington IV, into their lives on September 5, 2008.

In Memoriam

Karen Rothman-Fried '96, of Brooklyn, NY, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 36 on November 16, 2008, her husband Andrew Fried reports. Karen taught at the Special School of America, The Lycee FranÃ∞â√ıÃ≠§ois de New York, and Ella Baker School on the Upper East Side. In the fall of 2007, Karen began teaching third grade at PS 321 in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
