Graduate students in most programs may choose to do Supervised Fieldwork /Advisement (SFW/A) as student teachers, assistant teachers, or working (head) teachers. Students in the Early Childhood or Childhood General Education programs may also be eligible for a limited number of internships. These fieldwork choices are also known as "pathways"; using the left-hand navigation, see descriptions of the various pathways as well as explanations of programmatic differences.
In addition to the SFW/A year, many programs leading to New York State certification require additional supervised experiences during the summer term or during the school year. Students should talk with advisors or program directors about individual arrangements.
Note to students in the Early Childhood and Childhood General Education Dual Certification (aka Cross-Age) program: You must choose the student teacher pathway. This way, you are exposed to the wide range of ages covered in this program.
Note to students in the Museum Education programs: During your SFW/A year, you will spend one semester as a student teacher in a school setting, and the other in a museum setting. Again, placement sites are assigned based in part on knowledge of your stated interests and background. |
