Integrative Learning for Children in the Natural Environment
TE 536--3 Graduate Credits from Bank Street College
Instructor (July 1999): Judy Kesselman
People learn about the natural world best when they begin their inquiries with hands-on
investigation. Explorations of the forest, lake, marsh and stream around Tiorati
ground discussions of natural science concepts. In the Fal 1998, term the students
investigated stream biota, trees, and fungus. Participants reflect on these inquiries
to articulate principles of natural science teaching.

Special Study: Field Studies in Biological Science
TE 551--3 Graduate Credits from Bank Street College
Instructor: Don S. Cook

Summer term: Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
July 6 & 7, 13 & 14, 20 & 21, 27 & 28
A bus leaves from Bank Street College at 7:45 am.
HudsonWatch Institute encourages hands-on scientific discovery. Participants engage
in field investigations of the watershed of a tributary of the Hudson River, as a
model of the scientific enterprise. In the past, participants have investigated topography,
stream chemistry, stream biota, mushrooms, mammal tracking, lichens and mosses, and
decomposition.
HudsonWatch Institute cultivates a pedagogy of inquiry science. Participants evaluate
the processes that engage them as learners, reflect on the implications for curriculum,
and prepare a unit of study. They consider how to introduce hands-on scientific and
environmental investigations, making use of cooperative learning groups and assessment
strategies. |
