Maried Rivera Nieves is Associate Director of Equity and Implementation at the Center on Culture, Race & Equity. Born in Puerto Rico and raised primarily in Minnesota, Maried has worn the hats of scholar, educator, and advocate. She is passionate about creating spaces for learning that affirm all identities, encourage critical conversations, and motivate civic engagement. Maried has worked and volunteered with organizations that serve immigrant communities and advocate for gender equity. Through her work at the Institute of Latin American Studies and the Coalition of Latinx Scholars at Columbia University, she also helped develop workshops and curriculum guides on: Indigenous knowledges in education, youth-led conversations about the War on Drugs, and the use of participatory photography in New York City public schools, among others. She holds a Master’s in International Educational Development with a focus on Latin American and Latino Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
