General Position Description
The K-2 Literacy/Reading Specialist serves as a schoolwide consultant and K-2 coach on reading, writing, language arts assessments, curriculum, and intervention. The K-2 Literacy/Reading Specialist works closely with the Student Support Team to support students in developing their reading and writing skills. The K-2 Literacy/Reading Specialist provides reading intervention and support for students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 in collaboration with the Learning Specialist.

Essential Responsibilities

● Provide professional development and support to classroom teachers on age-level curriculum, Sounds in Motion, leveled libraries, and assessment
● Collaborate with teaching teams at regular intervals to develop, assess, and refine curriculum
● Engage with teaching teams, learning specialists, and school psychologist to develop and assess intervention strategies for individual children
● Train and support new teachers to facilitate guided reading groups in first and second grade
● Run reading groups in first and second grade classrooms
● Facilitate whole group Handwriting and writing lessons in first grade
● Meet with individual students before or after school for diagnostic purposes
● Provide written notes and ongoing communication to classroom teachers about individual students
● Participate in parent conferences, as needed
● Report out at team meetings for individual children, as needed
● Supervise student teachers in literacy from the grad school
● Other duties as assigned by the Division Head and/or Dean

Desired Qualifications

● Deep understanding of the developmental stages of reading and writing
● Successful history of coaching teachers around literacy instruction
● Experience developing and utilizing leveled libraries/matching readers with developmentally-appropriate texts
● Knowledge of a range of literacy assessment tools (F&P, QRI, PAT etc.), including running records
● Familiarity with and training in writers’ workshop, Orton Gillingham, Sounds in Motion, and Handwriting without Tears
● Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to social justice and equity
● Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
● Warmth, humor, flexibility, and optimism
